Project Cambria Update, Color Passthrough & Presence Platform

I’ll start by saying I’m sorry but I was wrong.

Project Cambria is definitely going to push VR gaming into the future. Today Zuck revealed some new info on the experiences coming to the cambria headset in a censored trailer along with a sit down with Jess schell from schell games who created games like i expect you to die and are working on the among us vr release.

In the conversation zuckerberg states the cambria will have a tighter form factor than the quest 2 and confirms the new high resolution color outward facing cameras as well as the depth sensors.

That color camera and depth sensor are the backbone to the newly released Presence Platform. Over the last few months devs have received new features one at a time and now it is ready and available to all developers. Soon we will be fishing in our floor or using spatial anchors to place digital assets in our physical world like this chess board to play with that one other friend you have that plays chess or bring the I expect you to die escape system right into our living room.

Basically the cambria will take the color camera view as your default home and then have assets digitally placed. With this Zuck hopes for mixed reality to help draw new people into vr with the presence platform. Instead of people being placed in a game world like vr they can now be in their physical world with the game placed inside it. So you can play beat saber in your bath tub. He used an example of bringing in a digital ping pong table into your living room and inviting a friend to play. Which makes me wonder if we will be buying games as digital assets in the future, which sounds much better than NFTs…

In the trailer Zuck posted we learned about an experience called the World beyond which uses the presence platform to create all new mixed reality experiences like adding these flowers and this Guitar digitally to your room or turn your walls into a dreamland of whatever you or well a dev can think up.

The world beyond will be available on the quest via app lab soon but of course only the full color pass through version will be available on cambria.

Zuck bucks did finish detailing one of his biggest focuses with cambria is on work and productivity. He expects by the end of this decade to see more people using a vr device at work for more of their work day. So they can have as many monitors as they need, and can collaborate with co workers who are far away but with the presence platform will be in the room with them. And again an innovation on zoom meetings. He also said the word hologram a lot. Star Wars life is not too far.

Lastly I did want to point out that even though the trailer had it pixelated the headset does look very much like the renders produced by Brad and Marcus Kane and peeping through the pixels it doesn’t seem like there will be too much space for light bleed underneath the cambria. Also brad of course saw the controllers on a charging pad and the headset unblurred in the background.

Well I hope to see your presence in this next video and what are your thoughts now that we have some more solid info on cambria. Let me know in the comments and I’ll catch you in the next quickie.

The Twilight Zone VR Preview on Oculus Quest 2

Your favorite 1960’s scifi franchise the twilight zone is coming to quest on July 14th

Based on the tv series, Twilight Zone VR is being developed by Pocket Money Games which masterfully adapted Superhot for the Quest and The game is officially licensed from CBS.

The game features 3 single player stories at launch that span from apocalyptic science fiction to some black mirror style technological horror. Here are the deets on the first 3 stories

Story one is called character building which follows a video game director that discovers that workplace cruelty is a dangerous game. So yeah be nice to your co-workers!

Number two entitled Terror Firma, (I see what you did there) puts you in the shoes of a survivor from an environmental apocalypse as you search city ruins for a glimmer of hope

Lastly for launch there is deadline earth where you become a science fiction writer (so meta) that finds himself captive on an insidious alien vessel.

Pocket Games mentions they were able to use Asynchronous Space Warp early on from Meta so they were able to push the graphical boundaries of what is possible on the quest 2.

If you’d like to see the game early you can sign up for their beta test with the link down below but beware you have to sign an NDA… I’m sorry but I want my agreements disclosed!

VR Treadmill Coming to Meta Quest 2 Standalone: Kat Walk C2 Preview

KAT VR and their highly recognizable ready player one consumer treadmill is about to introduce their new 2nd iteration to the world and if you get in early you’ll get a good bang for your buck.

As a quest 2 user my first question was will this work in standalone rather than the current pcvr setup?  And the team at kat got back to me with a promising response. Even though the quest platform has been closed off to external peripherals the team at KATVR believe they have found a way to achieve it and Quest 2 support is now in development. So fingers crossed we will soon be running and jumping in the quest version of bonelab with our actual legs.

To use the treadmill you rep a pair of custom sneakers while wearing a harness and standing on a friction less platform allowing you infinitely move about virtually in a fixed space physically. so you can run walk jump and crouch in this free locomotion supported device.

2 new models will be up for pre-order on kickstarter the kat walk c2 and c2 plus both improve upon version one with improving latency to 10ms, a new mode for sitting and their newly designed shoes.

Embedded with an optical sensor in the sole the new kicks allow for customization for friction so you can choose your level of comfort for virtual movement. This sensor allows for a 1 to 1 mapping of any foot movement in full 360 degrees

The new treadmills will be compatible with the quest, pc vr and playstation vr. The pro version comes with those sweet rgb lights, a haptic system that follows the haptics on your controllers and the all new and highly requested smart sitting posture system. The C2 plus can automatically detect when you are going into a seated position, locking the system in place until you later you stand up. Going further with this feature there are added vehicle simulation modes letting you feel like you’re in a heavy airplane up to a lighter weighted car.

The kickstarter campaign launches for these May 13th with an early bird price of $698 plus shipping and handling.  If you had one of these what's the first game you are playing with it? Me? I’m goin super hot so I can matrix my way to another part of a level. Hit the comments and I’ll see ya in the next quickie.

Meta Quest 2 Updates: How Do They Work & How to Join Quest 2 PTC

Its no secret that not everyone gets the Quest firmware updates at the same time and the folks at scarred ghost let us know why.

Firstly all quest updates get a gradual release so meta can catch any detrimental bugs and fix them before sending out completely to the masses. So you can be early in the rollout timeline but get the bugs or later in the release and get a clean update but just have to wait.

Meta does not time the rollouts by location so certain regions are not getting them before others its just completely random all over the world so they can test for any issues for different regions and languages. Also the timeline is supposedly randomized as well. If you received update 39 early you may be waiting longer than others for version 40. So its kind of like roulette headset.

As for timing, If the rollout goes smoothly they usually take just a few days to get to thos at the end of the line, but if problems arise of course it will take more time for everyone to get the update.

On top of update release timing, new features also get a staggered release. So you may have the latest update and looking for something like the new hand tracking 2.0 feature but don’t yet have it. Almost as if the feature gets a flag from meta’s servers on if your device can enable it or not.

Meta does this again to catch any bugs with new features they may be crippling to the device and if so they can remotely disable the feature while allowing the full update to proceed to everyone. New special features are usually rolled out over 3 - 5 days but again if there are problems it will be longer. Unfortunately as of right now there isn’t a way to know what features are or aren’t enabled for your device.

If you like to risk it for the bisquit you can sign up for the public test channel to get updates early but of course you can run into problems when testing beta software but you could also be the first one with that new Quest horizon home space feature we heard about forever ago.

Lifes nothing more than a gamble but to sign up for the PTC go into the newest update version of the oculus app on your phone while near your headset, enable bluetooth on your phone then go to menu at the bottom right then devices and once your headset is connected, go below to advance settings and you’ll see public test channel.

If you’re lucky there may be an opening for you but currently at least for me its full.

Life as a quest update is a lottery, do you get them pretty soon after they are announced? Let me know below and I’ll see you in the next quickie!

Meta is Building the Realistic Avatars of the Future

The folks working at Meta’s reality labs have built a prototype standalone VR headset that can produce photo realistic avatars.

With a custom built chip designed with I’m a real boy energy, reality labs is aiming to create video game mocap like avatars that animate in real time and in high detail using a combination of eye and mouth tracking sensors along with the black magic that is Artificial intelligence.

To make this a reality in a standalone quest like headset Meta built a custom chip with a 7 nanometer process with Codec Avatars specifically in mind. The chip was specially made for analyzing eye tracking images and features a neural network accelerator.

The codec’s AI model was reworked to take advantage of this new small chip that is able to perform at 30 frames a second with low power consumption and of course lower heat. No worry of VR faceburn.

This new chip is then coupled with the Quest 2 snapdragon XR2 CPU to handle the encoding process and render the actual visuals of your realistic avatar.

Of course this is an ongoing work in research and development but the future is always bright for VR innovation. Maybe one day this will help lower the cost of facial mocap for indie developers? Or just a new expanded horizon for Vtubers. Probably Vtubers.

My only question to meta is will these avatars of the future have legs?

Its the year 2030 and your Quest 6 has this feature, are you putting your real self in VR chat or a super high detailed creation of something else? Let’s explore in the comments and I’ll catch you in the next quickie.

Meta is Releasing FOUR New Quest VR Headsets? + Project Cambria Update

Another day means more Meta Quest leaks, this time from insider tech business publication the Information. Here’s the 411 on the four new quest headsets Meta is planning to release by 2024

In the reporting A road map for Meta was shown to feature a release for four different VR headsets in the next 2 years. The next one of course being project cambria then following up  are two new versions of the current more affordable and consumer friendly Quest internally named Stinson and Cardiff for 2023 and 2024. Then a second version of the cambria codenamed funston. Everything must be a beach in california bc well technology can only be created there right? Its all about the sand for the wafers.

So basically meta wants to release a high end headset and then a lower cost hmd the following year. Aka the back in the day apple approach to the S phone models.

This wicked fast timeline is to bring Zucks vision of the metaverse (ick) to life and get more people into VR. Which Goldman sachs predicts by 2023 over 19 million VR headsets will be sold. I mean add the upcoming PSVR2 plus the quest sales from this year and that number will more than likely be in sight.

The information reported that according to two people in the know, the cambria is expected to cost around $800 while a meta spokesperson said the price would be much higher.

Project cambria known inside Meta as Arcata, has been alluded to by the employees of Reality Labs as the laptop for the face or a chromebook for the face. Ahh yeas chrome facebook. OH GAH!

Cambria again will run on the android based vr OS which according to the information means it won’t be able to run many common workplace software designed for PCs or Macs, (press F excel master users) but it can run web based tools and services through the VR browser. Office 365 is about to go virtual.

Project Camb was said to be heavier than the quest 2 due to its larger battery but with the built in skull battery design it will be more balanced and comfortable than the quest 2.

Will $800 be the reality? Do we even care now that we definitely know it’s not going to really be for gaming? Hit me up in the comments and I’ll catch you in the next leakie…. I mean quickie.
